What is geotextile for paving slabs?
Geotextile for slabs is a synthetic non-woven material made from polypropylene, polyester, or other polymer fibers by needle-punching followed by calendering. It is used in civil and road construction to separate granular layers, preventing them from mixing and preserving the functionality of each layer. In block paving, the geotextile separates the crushed stone from the soil base below and the sand bedding above.
Geotextile fabric is available in widths of 1.0 and 3.0 m, and lengths of 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 m. It is supplied in rolls for easy transportation, storage, and use. Depending on density and thickness, it can withstand different loads, defining the application.

Properties and characteristics of geotextile for paving slabs
When laying paving slabs, geotextile with the following characteristics can be used:
- Surface density: 100–300 g/m².
- Thickness at 2 kPa load: from 0.4 to 2.4 mm.
- Relative elongation at break in the longitudinal and transverse directions: 20–50 % / 28–65 %.
- Tensile strength:
- Longitudinal: from 2.8-15.0 kN/m.
- Transverse: from 2.8-10.4 kN/m.

How to choose geotextile for paving?

- Geotextile type. Needle-punched calendered material is best suited, as it keeps surfaces even and is cheaper than woven material. For surfaces with high loads, it is better to choose an impregnated geotextile, which has higher rigidity.
- Density. It depends on the expected load on the paving stones:
- For paths in private gardens, it is sufficient to install fabric with a density of 100 g/m²;
- For pavements in public areas, a denser material is worth choosing – 150-200 g/m²;
- For driveways and passenger-car areas, it is better to use geotextile with a density of 250-300 g/m²; and in zones for truck access – 300 g/m² and above.
- Relative elongation. It is better to choose a geotextile for laying paving slabs with lower elongation to avoid subsidence.

Geotextile installation under paving slabs

The technology for laying paving slabs using geotextile fabric involves the following steps:
- Base preparation. Dig a trench in the ground to the dimensions of the future path or other block-paved area, with a depth of at least 10 cm. Level and compact the bottom of the excavation.
- Installation of the first geotextile layer on the soil base with a 45 cm allowance on the sides. Lay the fabric under tension and smooth its edges along the side walls of the excavation. If sheet joints are required, make an overlap of at least 15 cm and bond them thermally using a torch or molten bitumen. Fixing the geotextile with staples using a construction stapler is permitted.
- Crushed stone interlayer. Spread it over the geotextile across the entire surface of the path or other block-paved area to the required thickness and level it.
- Installation of the second geotextile layer. It should protrude 15-20 cm on the sides to connect with the lower sheet on the side wall of the excavation.
- Sand bedding. Before placing the sand, install the curbs, covering their sides with the turn-ups of the lower geotextile sheet. Then compact the sand bedding thoroughly, wetting it with water.
- Installation of the paving slabs.
