Certificates for geotextiles
Geotextile installation in road construction is one of the primary applications for this material. This solution not only extends the road service life and helps avoid frequent repairs of deformed and sunken road surfaces, but also reduces the road construction or reconstruction costs, since geotextile laid beneath the asphalt significantly reduces the required quantity of crushed-stone base. Flexx manufactures in Ukraine and supplies high-quality road geotextiles at manufacturer pricing to private customers, entrepreneurs, and companies involved in road construction.
What is road geotextile?

Flexx road-construction geotextile is a non-woven roll material made of polyester fibers using a needle-punched method. It is heat-treated by calendering (passing through heated rollers – calenders). We use two technologies to produce geotextile fabrics (agrotextile):
- “Staple”, which involves fabric formed from short fibres.
- “Spunbond”, when geotextile fabric is formed from continuous (filament) fibers obtained by extruding molten polymer through fine spinneret orifices.
Filament road fabric has a smoother and more uniform surface, as well as higher tensile strength and greater puncture resistance. It is stiffer and more durable than staple fiber geotextiles.
Needle-punched, calendered fabric for road construction undergoes additional treatment with chemical compounds that increase its mechanical stress resistance and provide higher strength and stiffness. It is supplied in rolls 1.01, 1.5, and 3.03 m wide and 100 or 150 running metres long.
Calendered, chemically bonded geotextile of the following grades is used for road construction and repair:
- Runo P 200, Runo P 250, and Runo P 300 are manufactured using staple fiber technology.
- Runo SP 200, Runo SP 250, and Runo SP 300 are manufactured using spunbond technology.
Geotextile for roads specifications
Geotextile fabrics used for road construction and repair have the following technical specifications:
- Density – 200, 250, and 300 g/m².
- Tensile strength along the length/width, not less than:
- For Runo P – from 12.0 / 7.4 to 15.0 / 10.4 kN/m.
- For Runo SP – from 12.4 / 9.8 to 16.0 / 14.0 kN/m.
- Relative elongation at break, in % (in the longitudinal and transverse directions):
- Runo P 200 – 22/35.
- Runo P 250 – 23/36.
- Runo P 300 – 24/36.
- Runo SP 200 – 24/25.
- Runo SP 250 – 30/30.
- Runo SP 300 – 30/30.
- Thickness at 2 kPa load for such geotextile grades:
- Runo P – from 0.8-1.1 to 1.9-2.4 mm.
- Runo SP – 1.2-1.6 mm.
- Operating temperature range: −50… +200 °C.
Geotextile for roads, offered for sale by Flexx, is environmentally safe and resistant to UV exposure, mold and mildew formation, as well as to oils and other aggressive substances.
Tasks solved by geotextile
Geotextile laid beneath the roadway helps solve several important engineering tasks aimed at increasing the road structure stability and durability. Its use provides:
- Road base strengthening. Geotextile acts as a reinforcing layer, increasing the bearing capacity of unstable and weak soils.
- Layer separation. It prevents intermixing of soil with crushed stone, and crushed stone with sand, thereby preserving the physical-mechanical properties of each layer.
- Water drainage from the roadbed. It increases the road frost resistance, its resistance to heaving and destruction from freezing moisture.
- Surface water filtration. By trapping fine soil and sand particles, it prevents clogging of the drainage system.
- Uniform distribution of wheel loads over a large section of the road. Eliminating point pressure reduces the risk of potholes and depressions in the road surface.
- Embankment slope and excavation strengthening.
- Protection of waterproofing membranes, pipes, and other engineering structures laid under the roadway from mechanical damage by stones, machinery, or plant roots.
How to choose geotextile for laying under road pavement?
The choice of agrotextile for road construction or reconstruction is greatly influenced by the roadbed load and the list of tasks the material must perform. At the same time, the primary selection criterion is the material surface density, which correlates directly with the roadway loading. As a geotextile manufacturer, we recommend choosing fabrics with a density of:
- 200 g/m² – for low-traffic roads. These can be access roads to a cottage or private house for passenger cars.
- 250 g/m² – for urban roads in residential areas with medium traffic by passenger cars and trucks, as well as for passenger car parking lots.
- 300 g/m² – for high-traffic roads and highways with heavy loads (including freight traffic), HGV parking lots, and roads built on sandy soils.
When choosing a geotextile for road works to reinforce embankments and excavations, select fabrics with a density of 200-250 g/m² for gentle slopes (up to 30°), and 300 g/m² for steeper slopes (30-60°).
Also, you should consider the manufacturing technology:
- Runo P non-woven staple fabrics offer high flexibility and water permeability; therefore, they are suitable for drainage and filtration.
- Runo SP non-woven geotextile made of filament fibers (“spunbond” technology) is better suited for layer separation, base reinforcement, and slope stabilization.
Geotextile installation in road construction
When constructing a new road, geotextile installation involves the following work stages:
- Road bed preparation. The topsoil is removed to the depth of the road structure, and then it is levelled and compacted.
- Geotextile installation. At the joints, an overlap of 20-30 cm is required on stable and solid ground, and 50-70 cm – on marshy and weak ground. All folds and bends must be smoothed out.
- Sheets fastening with a construction stapler, staples, special anchors, thermal methods, adhesive bonding, or stitching.
- Filling the levelling layer with sand or sand-gravel mixture, followed by a load-bearing layer of crushed stone and other layers specified in the project.
In a multi-layer road structure, geotextile is laid on each functional road layer after the underlying layer has been compacted.
